Värmdö Container Home in Sweden’s Scenic Lakeside

Nestled on the southern shore of Hemmestaträsket, a small lake in the Värmdö municipality east of Stockholm, lies the Värmdö Container House. This striking home is a testament to innovative design and the creative use of repurposed materials. Built by Linda and Thomas, the house is as much a reflection of their family’s values as it is an architectural marvel.

The Vision Behind the Värmdö Container House

Linda and Thomas’s interest in container construction stemmed from their shared love of industrial design and vintage American cars. Linda’s long-time admiration for container architecture inspired her to collect ideas and photos, while Thomas’s mechanic skills and Linda’s father’s welding expertise gave them confidence to embark on a DIY journey.

Sustainability also played a key role in their decision. Passionate about eco-friendly living, the couple saw the potential of shipping containers to create a home that would minimise waste and harmonise with nature.

Overcoming Challenges to Build on a Rocky Lakeside

The plot they chose presented significant challenges. Located on a steep slope with rocky terrain, it was deemed unbuildable by previous owners. Local regulations also prohibited rock demolition, further complicating construction efforts.

Instead of forcing traditional methods on the land, Linda and Thomas used shipping containers to create a home that floated above the uneven terrain. The containers bridged high points of the rocky site, allowing the home to blend seamlessly with its natural surroundings without major land alterations.

A Creative and Sustainable Home Design

In 2015, Linda and Thomas collaborated with architect Måns Tham to design their dream home. The result was a three-level structure made from five 40-ft and three 20-ft high-cube containers. The minimalist design features large windows that capture stunning views of the lake and forest while allowing natural light to flood the interior.

On the ground floor, two 20-ft containers and one 40-ft container house a den, a guest bed, a utility room, and the main bathroom. The bathroom is particularly unique, with a window offering a view of the rocky terrain below.

The main floor, constructed with four 40-ft containers, includes an open-plan kitchen, living, and dining area with expansive lake views. Toward the rear are private spaces: a master bedroom, a secondary bedroom, and two smaller children’s bedrooms. A sky bridge connects the home to the rocky hill behind, providing access to the surrounding forest.

The third level, built from a single 20-ft container, includes a mezzanine and a lightwell that brings ambient light into the main floor below.

The DIY Journey to Build the Värmdö Container House

Much of the construction was completed by Linda, Thomas, and their children, turning the project into a family adventure. They lived in a shed on the property during the three-year build, balancing the demands of construction with maintaining a healthy family life.

Concrete anchors embedded into the bedrock supported the containers, which were hoisted into place with a crane. Substantial modifications, including cutting windows, creating open spaces, and insulating the walls, transformed the containers into a comfortable home.

Eco-Friendly Choices in Every Detail

Sustainability was a guiding principle throughout the project. Linda and Thomas salvaged materials wherever possible, integrating them seamlessly into the home’s modern aesthetic.

Examples of their resourcefulness include:

Staircases from a decommissioned restaurant and military base
A trash chute repurposed as a laundry chute
Reused kitchen cabinets, sinks, and countertops
Upcycled timber planks and metal components

Their commitment to repurposing not only saved money but also reduced environmental impact, ensuring that the home stayed true to their eco-friendly vision.
