Nestled in the serene forests near Victoria on Vancouver Island, a DIY container home has become a symbol of healing and simplicity. Lance, the homeowner, turned to this project after experiencing profound personal losses—the deaths of his mother and a close friend. These events led him to rethink his priorities and search for a life with deeper meaning and purpose.

Leaving behind a high-stress career in Northern Alberta designing roads, Lance moved closer to family. Determined to simplify his life, he sought an affordable, self-sufficient housing solution. That decision brought him to the idea of building a tiny home out of a shipping container on his grandfather’s land.

Designing a Simpler Life with a Tiny Container Home

Lance’s move toward minimalism was driven by a desire to reduce his living costs and focus on pursuits he truly cared about, such as hockey coaching and participating in the local arts community. By downsizing, he let go of unnecessary possessions and created a home tailored to his needs.

Starting with a 20-foot shipping container, Lance quickly realised he needed a bit more space. Using an innovative approach, he extended the container by 4 feet by opening the container doors at 90 degrees and enclosing the gap, gaining an additional 32 square feet. The resulting 24-foot home combines functionality with charm.

Efficient Layout and Thoughtful Interior Design

The home’s design showcases a careful balance of practicality and style. Upon entering through the side door, visitors step into a well-equipped kitchen featuring a large refrigerator, double sink, and ample cabinetry. The wood countertop, finished with a glossy coat, adds warmth and sophistication to the space.

Adjacent to the kitchen is a compact yet functional bathroom. It features a full-size shower and provisions for a toilet, although Lance often uses facilities in the nearby main house. The decision to forgo a bathroom sink simplifies the layout, as the kitchen sink serves dual purposes in the tiny home.

At the far end of the container lies the bedroom. A foam mattress sits atop three oversized drawers, providing generous storage for clothes and personal belongings. A wall-mounted TV on a pivoting bracket allows for comfortable viewing from the bed or kitchen, while curated artwork and thoughtful décor bring personality to the space.

Creative Expansion for a Functional Living Space

Lance’s creativity shines in the details of his home. A large Arbutus tree branch adorned with ivy stretches across the width of the container, adding a natural, tranquil vibe. Driftwood stumps, rocks, and a terrarium enhance the connection to the surrounding forest.

By insulating the container with a mix of spray foam and polystyrene board, Lance achieved impressive energy efficiency. With 4 inches of insulation in the walls and 6 inches in the ceiling, the home stays warm even during Vancouver Island’s cool weather. A simple radiative heater and occasional candles suffice to maintain a cozy environment.

Sustainable Living with Minimal Operating Costs

The entire project cost Lance around CAD 14,000 (roughly $10,500 in 2019). His ability to handle much of the construction himself, with occasional help from friends, kept expenses low without sacrificing quality.

Operating costs are equally modest, thanks to the home’s small size and efficient design. With only a 30A electrical service required, utilities remain affordable. Living in this tiny container home has allowed Lance to focus on what truly matters—spending time with loved ones and pursuing creative, meaningful work.
