Riverside Hideout stands as a testament to determination and creativity, transforming an idyllic piece of land into a sought-after short-term rental. Located near Ohio’s Tuscarawas River, this unique shipping container home offers guests a getaway that’s as distinctive as the land it sits on. For Ryann, the vision behind Riverside Hideout was simple: create something unlike any other rental in the area.

The Vision Behind Riverside Hideout

Ryann’s property near the river, surrounded by hiking trails and recreational opportunities, seemed perfect for a short-term rental. While others in the area leaned toward barn-style tiny homes inspired by the local Amish aesthetic, Ryann wanted something that stood out. A shipping container home presented the perfect blend of affordability, customizability, and uniqueness. It was more than just a practical choice—it was an opportunity to create a destination in itself.

Building the Riverside Hideout

With a 40-foot high-cube container as the foundation, Ryann embarked on an ambitious DIY project. The entire build was a family effort, with Ryann, her parents, siblings, husband, and children contributing evenings and weekends to bring the vision to life. Drawing on her family’s extensive construction experience, she designed the layout and sourced materials locally, relying on resale stores and creative solutions to keep costs low.

The construction process wasn’t without its challenges. The rural site’s difficult access required the use of a bulldozer to maneuver the container into place. Once the container was on its concrete footers, the family got to work, building interior walls, adding insulation, and installing features like sliding glass doors to flood the space with natural light.

A Unique and Functional Design

The Riverside Hideout is purpose-built for short-term stays. The living room features a queen-size fold-out couch with stunning views of the river through oversized sliding glass doors, which open to a spacious back deck. The kitchen includes ample open shelving, a quirky bar area supported by a bicycle frame, and a locking cabinet for supplies.

The bathroom, with its corrugated metal shower surround, is positioned to share plumbing with the kitchen to prevent frozen pipes in colder months. Past the bathroom lies a cozy bedroom designed for two guests, maximising the space without the need for a door.

Climate control is handled by wall air conditioners and baseboard heaters, ensuring comfort in all seasons. While the home is complete and operational, Ryann has plans to add more features, including a pergola crafted from bicycle rims and a front entrance overhang made from salvaged materials.

Lessons Learned

The Riverside Hideout is a success, but the project wasn’t without its learning moments. Initially, fiberglass insulation was used, which led to condensation issues in the cold climate. Ryann had to replace it with closed-cell spray foam insulation and rework parts of the bathroom and kitchen ceilings. Additionally, underestimating the electrical needs of the kitchen led to frequent tripped breakers, a problem that will require future upgrades.

A Growing Short-Term Rental Success

Since opening, the Riverside Hideout has exceeded expectations. Guests are drawn to the home’s unique design and peaceful setting. Many leave inspired, with some even planning their own container home projects after their stay.

Despite lacking Wi-Fi and TV, the rental offers a full suite of amenities and provides a chance to unplug and reconnect with nature. With consistent bookings through Airbnb and other platforms, Ryann’s investment is already paying off. She’s even considering building a second container rental in the future.

The Riverside Hideout isn’t just a rental—it’s a labor of love that showcases what’s possible with vision, teamwork, and determination. For Ryann and her family, it’s a beautiful reminder of their shared effort and the potential to turn dreams into reality.
